Lalitha Sahasranamam Stotram or Lalita Sahasra Namam Stotra is the sacred Hindu devotional slokha for the devotees of Goddess Lalitha Devi, the Divine Mother Goddess Parvathi Devi in the form of her and theAdi Shakti. Lalitha Sahasranama is in the 36th chapter of Lalitopakyana in Brahmanda Purana. It is presented in the form of instructions imparted to the sage Agasthya by Hayagriva who is the incarnation of Lord Sri Maha Vishnu.
Hayagriva tells Agasthya the story of the incarnation of Lalitha Devi. The names are organised as in a hymn, i.e. in the way of stotras. This hymn occurs in the Brahmanda Purana. It is a dialogue between Hayagriva, an (avatara) of MahaVishnu and the great sage Agastya. Lalitha sahasranama was composed by 8 vaag devis (vaag devathas) upon the command of Devi Sri Lalitha. The 8 vaag devis are – Vasini, Kameshwari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayinee, Modhinee, Sarveshwari, Koulini. This depicts us the truth “One can worship Lalitha only if she wishes us to do so”.
The slokas are organised in such a way that, Devi is described from “Head to Feet” (kEsAdhi pAdham).
Lalitha sahasra namam is held as a sacred text for the worship of the Divine Mother, Lalita, and is also used in the worship of Durga, Kali, Lakshmi,Saraswati, Bhagavathi, etc. It is a principal text of Shakti worshippers. Lalita Sahasranama names the various attributes of the Divine Mother, and all these names are organised in the form of a hymn. This Sahasranama is used in various modes for the worship of the Divine Mother. Some of the modes of worship are parayana (Recitations), archana, homa etc, Lalitha Sahasra Naama is one of the principal texts of Sakta Cult of Sanatana Hindu Dharmathe other two being are Durga Sapta Sati and Soundarya Lahari. When Vishnu Sahasra Naama helps the devotee to attain spiritual well being and subsequent Moksha(salvation) the Lalitha Sahasra Naama imparts saadhaka both spiritual and material upliftment. Our pranams to Sree Lalithambika whose body is glowing in a vermilion red color and with
three eyes. She is sporting a crown of rubies studded with the crescent moon, with a face full of
smiles. That She is easily accessible is indicated by Her benign smile. Our pranams to Sree
Lalithambika, who has in store for her children an inexhausible life in Her splendid and full breast. She is holding in one hand a cup which is made up of precious jewels and filled with
honey and fresh red lotus which is surrounded by bees who come to drink the nectar from it, in
the other hand. These symbolise joy and wisdom of which She alone is the source. Her feet is
placed on a precious pot full of valuable gems indicating that nothing is difficult for those who
surrender to Her feet and take refuge in Her.

towards devotees, and bestowing protection and all prosperity on them. Adored by all
celestials, she is the very embodiment of Sri Vidya and Tranquility. She dispels fear and is the

There was a comment on "One can worship Lalitha only if she wishes us to do so". I understood the same like this. Anyone who has faith in Lalitha or any other form of God will worship her or him only if he develops faith in her or him. If faith is developed you worship him or her. If you do not develop faith in him or her naturally you stay away from worshipping her or him. Indirectly it is said that Lalitha or any God will develop interest in us either by chance or through a Guru or teacher and so we will start worshipping him or her. Hence "One can worship Lalitha only if she wishes us to do so". - Gowri Sankar
